ba ba BOOM
Religious people can’t engineer or solve complex problems?
People think this is a smart thing to say?
He’s not saying “religious people”, not at all. Nye isn’t the anti-religious Richard Dawkins type. He’s specifically talking about young earth creationism, the anti-science idea that the planet and universe are 6000 years old and the line is regarding his recent debate with Ken Ham, head of the incredibly racist Creation Museum.
Here’s the thing, the religious people who built the above structures weren’t anti-science, anti-knowledge, anti-learing, these cultures valued these things. When you’re training your child that evolution is an evil lie, that the planet is 6000 years old, that all the natural formations on earth were formed by some physically impossible massive flood, that the craters on the moon were formed by geysers errupting from earth and hitting it during said flood, that dinosaurs were on the ark, that all of humanity came from one dudes family after that flood around 4k years ago, that the son of Noah who was cursed that his descendents would be servants were the ones who went to Africa (a view which has been used to justify slavery extensively, EVEN TO THIS DAY), that the Loch Ness Monster is actually a dinosaur and proof of God’s creation, that ‘secularism’ has corrputed science and turned it against god, etc. etc. etc. then you are seriously disadvantaging that child when it comes to learning anything in the sciences.
Nye isn’t condemning religion, he’s condemning right wing extremist evangelical young earth creationism, and in a wold where a lack in scientific literacy is currently harming our ecosystem and reducing our species odds of survival, and as someone who was raised in this fucked up mindset (the reason I know so much about what they teach is because I was taught it as a child), I think his point holds absolutely true when taken in context.
Just wanted to see Mr. and Mrs. Asomugha on my dash this Friday morning.
I’m surprised these pics have survived.
They knew what they were doing when they entered that photo booth. This was not a surprise to them.
So much beauty on my screen it beggars belief.
You cannot buy electronics with food stamps. You cannot buy cigarettes with food stamps. You cannot buy pet food with food stamps. You cannot withdraw money with an EBT card (food stamps).
Do you know what else you can’t buy with food stamps? Shampoo, soap, laundry detergent, toilet paper, paper towels, tissues, tinfoil, plastic sandwich bags, toothpaste, cleaning products, tampons, pads, over the counter medications (such as Tylenol, Ibuprofen, etc.), and anything else you can think of that you cannot physically ingest for nutritional purposes.
Do you know what you can buy with food stamps? Food.
Do you know what it’s like to scrounge for change to buy non-edible necessities, use a credit card and EBT card (food stamps) during the same transaction, and then have the person in line behind you judge you for buying the ingredients to make a birthday cake?
People who disseminate false information about food stamps have never had to use food stamps.
Re blogging for commentary mostly. How are people so ignorant? The ONLY thing you can buy w food stamps is fucking FOOD.
I don’t know if it’s a state by state thing, but there are also certain “junk food” products that people like to complain that poor folks are wasting their food stamps on that I know my ex could not purchase with EBT when he was on it. Anything labeled an energy drink, things like birthday cakes and specialty food items, some candies and snack food, etc. The EBT just wouldn’t cover their balance. if you had those in your grocery cart and rang them up with everything else, the EBT would cover the other items and leave the balance for the out-of bounds items behind and you would have to pay for them out of pocket. And for fucks sake you most certainly can not spend them at restaurants or places that cook and sell “Big chicken legs.” You can use them at SOME grocery stores and a few convience stores/ big box pharmacies that stock groceries. That is all.
I can personally verify this. Being on disability and food stamps is NOT the easy ride they for some reason want to make it out to be.
I’m so confused. I worked in retail at a convenience store and people bought soda, candy, beer, cigarettes and took out money off of their cards for cashback. You can also use them for deli sandwiches at some places.
Maybe it varies state to state but all I know is that people find ways to use manipulate it so they get what they want and people who actually use it for what they need are punished for it.
You can buy sodas and pre packaged “unhealthy foods” but it depends it really just has to be considered raw, like you can buy a can of soup and we would get cookies a baked cake from the bakery is considered cooked. some stores illegally allow ebt purchases for cigerettes and beer and they just charge it as some kind of food it but isn’t common as or as bad ad fox makes it out to be. I highly doubt big stores like Walmart or best buy are allowing people to charge a whole damn tv as raw meat
Bless the Elementary wardrobe department.
i feel like every week i’m just like “i need to get through this week”
“They have an incredible connection after the whirlwind of filming 12 Years A Slave and then promoting it together,” a source told British newspaper The Sun.
“In September during the Toronto Film Festival they had a brief romance.”
Apparently Michael is so enamoured with Lupita he recently called it quits with Romanian supermodel Madalina Ghenea.
The outlet also reports he decided to bring his mother to the Academy Awards, so that Lupita is clear she is the only woman he wants in his life romantically.
this needed to be a gif.
You can say I’m upholding respectability politics or whatever but I’m going to be more critical of rappers from now on. I’m tired of a lot of them, mainstream mostly and by mainstream I mean shit on the radio not at the Grammys, not taking stands for our community, promoting violence, misogyny, and colorism. I’m over it. I was having a very long argument, like 3hours, about the state of black schools a few days ago and the only point I couldn’t get across was that rappers couldn’t be to blame. Someone in the argument was a teacher and she wasn’t hearing it because she’s actually working with these failing black students and she said whenever they’re asked about they’re behavior music comes up. She’s a lover of hip hop like myself but she was right to act as if hip hop is playing no part is being willingly ignorant.
